Whether you’re here to join your family, go to school or take a gap year, coming to a new country can be challenging.
One of the biggest hurdles can be finding the right job to help build your skills and gain valuable Canadian experience. If you need some ideas on what kinds of jobs to look for, here are a few to consider:
Census enumerator. The 2021 Census is coming up, and Statistics Canada will be hiring entry-level enumerators to collect census data. This is a great way to meet people in your neighbourhood while gathering important information that will help improve your community. You’ll also benefit from training and skills development in interviewing, working with the public, data entry, map reading and more. Applications open in January 2021, with start dates in April 2021.
School support. From elementary school to universities and colleges, working in an educational institution is rewarding and meaningful work. Some jobs in the field require highly specialized degrees, while others don’t require any post-secondary education. These jobs often offer scheduling flexibility and part-time options, and include a variety of roles, such as exam invigilator, social worker, cook and early childhood educator.
Transit agency. Public transportation is becoming increasingly important as we try to combat climate change, and more and more cities and towns are investing in their infrastructure. Many public transit jobs don’t require driving or post-secondary education, and most offer good benefits.
