Genetic research scientist Dr Bharati Bapat
Dr Bharati Bapat is one of Canada’s leading genetic researchers and one of only a handful of female scientists worldwide with insight into how epigenetics influences our risk of cancer – an emerging and important new field in cancer research.
“The reason for the level of interest in epigenetics research is that it opens up a whole new world of treatment options,” she says.
Dr Bapat moved to Canada from Mumbai in 1983 when a post-doctoral opportunity was offered at Dalhousie University. She then accepted a research associateship at Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto where she studied inherited disorders.
She brought her genetics expertise to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto in 1991, and introduced molecular diagnostics to other researchers at the hospital.
Today, Mount Sinai is a leader in the field, thanks to her work in developing new, individualized diagnoses and treatments for prostrate and colorectal cancer.
Dr Bapat is also a full professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology.
