You planned your move. Let Scotiabank help you Start Right in Canada.

Name: Mahinder Chawla

Title: Financial Solutions Specialist, Hwy 10 and Kirwin Branch, Mississauga, Ontario. 905-276-2162 x 4504.

Country of origin: India

Year of arrival in Canada: 2009

How I became a Scotiabanker: Mahinder Chawla had moved from India to Kenya and then to the United Kingdom, but Canada beckoned. “Our friends told us that Canada welcomed immigrants and that life here would be systematic and the environment would be conducive to personal and professional growth.”  Mahinder came well prepared for the immigrant reality having done his research, reviewed community services and having his degrees assessed prior to arrival. In Canada, Mahinder went to ACCES Employment, an Ontario agency that he had looked into prior to his arrival.  Scotiabank’s sponsorship of this Program enables internationally-trained professionals to obtain employment in the banking or accounting fields.  Upon completion of the Financial Services Connection Program and the Canadian Securities Course, Mahinder joined Scotiabank as a Personal Banking Officer in January 2010, barely six months after landing in Canada. Mahinder now advises other new immigrants who come to Scotiabank’s Hwy 10 and Kirwin branch in Mississauga, Ontario. He tells them about all the advantages offered by the Scotiabank StartRight® Program1 for Newcomers, which includes a free day-to-day bank account for one year2, a wide range of credit card options3 and a number of other customized services and benefits.

Mahinder’s advice for newcomers: “One of the biggest advantages for a newcomer coming from a country such as China or India is being able to open an account while still in their home country. They can then wire transfer landing funds instead of having to carry a draft for a large amount and waiting for it to clear. On landing, they can show the bank’s e-mail confirmation as proof of funds to the immigration officer. It doesn’t get easier than this!”
