More than 200 international students received an official welcome to Toronto as part of an International Student Welcome Program event at Toronto City Hall.
Representatives from the program’s participating universities, colleges and sponsors were joined by representatives from the Embassies and High Commissions of selected countries for international students. Three international students were also presented with awards for community service, entrepreneurship and high achievement.
The International Student Welcome Program is initiated by the City of Toronto and sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Participating academic institutions include the University of Toronto, York University, Ryerson University, OCAD University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, George Brown College, Humber College, Centennial College, Seneca College and Sheridan College.
This program acknowledges the economic impact of the more than 25,000 students (from more than 100 countries) on Toronto, Canada’s largest centre for international students. In 2010, international students brought an estimated $846 million to the local economy, and were responsible for creating over 9,000 jobs.
